Teeth cleaning for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment

Whether you use braces or aligners, you have the same problem: getting food out of your teeth.

Whether you’re straightening your teeth with braces or Invisalign aligners, your teeth will accumulate more food particles and tartar than natural teeth. We therefore recommend coming in for a quick cleaning more often than usual to reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), or white spots on your teeth at the end of your treatment.

First things first

The hygienist will systematically conduct a thorough evaluation of your mouth and appliance (aligner or braces) to make sure that everything looks good before starting the dental hygiene treatment.

Teeth cleaning for patients with braces or under orthodontic treatment at the CHD

Teeth cleaning while under orthodontic treatment requires several sessions with different functions:

  • a cleaning session before the rings or aligners are fitted
  • a second instructional session immediately after the braces or aligners are fitted, during which the hygienist explains how to brush your teeth with these appliances and which accessories to use
  • a session every 3 or 4 months, depending on your oral hygiene habits
  • a session during which the orthodontist removes the appliance to properly clean your teeth and remove any adhesive residue

If needed, the hygienist can apply fluoride to your teeth throughout your treatment.

We clean your teeth using EMS ultrasound and Deppeler manual curettes. At the CHD, this treatment is painless: we use a state-of-the-art system from the renowned Swiss brand EMS, combined with “NO-PAIN” technology.

We polish your teeth with the AIRFLOW air polisher to access areas that are hard to reach with braces, and to clean thoroughly around each bracket or “attachment” in the case of aligners.

Recommendations

The hygienist will give you all the information you need to effectively care for your teeth and orthodontic appliance. This is also the perfect time to ask any questions you have about good oral habits.

Your next appointment

We’ll book your next appointment as part of the CHD’s personalized follow-up. During orthodontic treatment, we recommend coming in every 3 or 4 months depending on your oral hygiene habits. And we’ll take care of reminding you: let us know if you prefer a text message, letter, or e-mail!
